I've been giving this a lot of thought, far too much to document at this late hour! But, my new word for this is:"Altstream"
Nirvana were alternative until Nevermind came out. They then went mainstream. They charted, were on terrestrial TV etc...
So exposure can create the shift from Alternative to Mainstream. I think also that Duration & popularity can have an effect.
